Because Every Great Coach Starts Somewhere

The Spark

Most first-time coaches are thrown into the role. One day you’re cheering from the sidelines — the next, you’re in charge of practice schedules, game plans, and keeping a dozen parents happy.  I’ve been there. Early in my coaching career, I worked with skilled high school players — my college background made it easy to develop their game. Years later, when I started coaching my own kids, I assumed the same tools would work. It was a disaster. The drills went over their heads, practices fell apart, and no one was having fun — including me. That’s when I knew I needed a better way. I built a system to meet kids at their level, keep practices engaging, and make sure they improved every week. The result? Seasons where kids were learning, smiling, and parents were genuinely happy.

My Philosophy

The best seasons aren’t defined by the scoreboard. They’re defined by kids improving, having fun, and walking away with experiences they’ll remember for life.

The Turning Point

When I started coaching my second child’s team, I used my new system from day one. The difference was immediate. We beat teams with equal or better talent — but more importantly, our kids loved playing.

That’s when it hit me: those other coaches weren’t failing because they didn’t care. They were failing because they didn’t have a system. If they did, their kids would be smiling too.

Weekend Coach was born to make that possible.

The Problem

Youth sports is cutthroat. Parents will do anything to create a winning and positive season for their kids — and they’re expecting you to deliver  it. Without the right tools, first-time coaches waste time, lose confidence, and struggle to give their team the season they imagined.

The Solution

Weekend Coach distills three decades of hard-earned lessons into clear, ready-to-use tools that remove the guesswork and give you the confidence of a seasoned coach from day one.

Because the sooner you stop scrambling, the sooner you can start leading.

Your Season, Your Legacy

You’ll still make the calls from the sideline. But with the right plans, strategies, and perspective, you’ll coach with confidence, earn respect, and deliver a season worth remembering — for your players, their parents, and for yourself.

About the Founder

I’m Patrick Thompson, the creator of Weekend Coach. Basketball has been at the center of my life—from playing in college to coaching kids at every level over the past 30 years. Along the way, I’ve made just about every mistake a coach can make, and I’ve seen firsthand the frustration that drives kids to quit and parents to burn out.
Weekend Coach is my answer to that. It’s the system I wish I’d had when I first started coaching my kids—one built to meet kids at their level, keep practices fun and productive, and give every coach the confidence to lead from day one.
If you’ve chosen Weekend Coach, I’m excited to be alongside you this season—you’ll never have to coach alone. And if you haven’t, my wish is that this season is a positive, confidence-building experience for you and your players, and that every one of your players walks away loving the game a little more.
